Artesia dates to the turn of the century, when the arrival of the railroad linking Roswell to Carlsbad brought a small community of settlers to the area. Drilling for water, they discovered local artesian wells, followed by oil, which brought prospectors and industry to the area.
Today, oil and gas industry remains a big part of Artesia’s economy, along with farming and ranching. Officially incorporated in 1905, Artesia has a small-town atmosphere with plenty of events and activities for everyone.
Learn MoreOnce known as The Pearl of the Pecos, Carlsbad originated in 1888 as the Town of Eddy, named for Charles B. Eddy, who played a major role in its founding. Improvements to area mineral springs and the touting of their healing properties led to the re-naming of Eddy to Carlsbad, honoring the acclaimed European spa Karlsbad.
The discovery of the Bat Cave in 1901 and the opening of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 1930 has put Carlsbad on the international map. Located in the Chihuahuan Desert along the Pecos River, Carlsbad’s tree-lined streets, ample public parks, recreation areas and vibrant business community, make it an appealing place to visit, and live.
Perched high in the Sacramento Mountains at nearly 9,000 feet, Cloudcroft was once accessible only by train. In the 1890s, railroad developers were drawn to the majestic mountains and pristine wilderness of the area. They were also intrigued by the way the clouds touched the ground, and thus, Cloudcroft – “a pasture for the clouds” – was born. Today, the town’s unique blend of pioneer heritage and contemporary life, attracts thousands of visitors every year, for shopping, hiking, mountain biking, skiing and more.

If the truth is out there, you’ll find it in Roswell, a city of intergalactic intrigue. But there’s much more to this southeastern New Mexico spot than its famous history. Many believe a mysterious crash in 1927 on a nearby ranch may have involved a flying saucer and aliens.
Roswell also offers out-of-this-world recreation areas, including Bottomless Lakes State Park and Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. A visit to the Roswell Museum and Art Center offers a look at the history and art of the American Southwest and beyond.
